Adventurer finishes solo row across Tasman
Updated
New Zealander Shaun Quincey has completed his solo journey across the Tasman Sea after more than seven weeks rowing at sea.
Quincey had to finish the last 300 meters by swimming as swells were too big to row his boat ashore.
Dozens of supporters on boats and on jet skis had gathered at 90 Mile Beach in the far north of New Zealand to welcome the adventurer home.
His support crew dragged his boat in as he was welcomed home by his partner and mother.
The 25-year-old is only the second person in history to finish a solo rowing trip between Australia and New Zealand.
His father was the first in 1977 but went in the opposite direction, from New Zealand to Australia.
Eating his first fresh meal in seven weeks, Shaun Quincey says his achievement is still sinking in.
"It's going to take me a few days to come to terms with the fact that I've been at sea for 54 days," he said.
"I've just first got to come to terms with that and relax and then I'll be OK."
He says the last few kilometres were particularly tough and he is glad to be home.
